Joyce Carol Oates Essay and my 2010 Hate List

I wrote an essay about Joyce Carol Oates’s brilliant “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” for Beatrice.com’s selling shorts feature.

Read “Man the Flying Saucers” here.

Hipster Bookclub posted their 2010 top 5 lists from a bunch of cool authors. And me! I was encouraged to be creative, so despite my generally sunny disposition I gave them my list of TOP 5 THINGS I HATED IN 2010. Number 1 won’t be a surprise to those of you who know me.

Dig on the hate here.

  1. Aha, two things I love — Oates and pickles.

I read “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been,” this afternoon, and man, you’re right. While I am an anti-mathematician, it really is the idea of “possibilities” that creates the dread in the story — none of the choices seem rewarding, whether staying home and being a good girl or leaving with the friend/fiend (and likely rapist/murderer). So much is left unsaid, but the feeling of dread builds from the first paragraph.

Thanks for the read and comment. Despite your love of pickles!
